AI is expected to be the highlight of Apple's upcoming Global developer Conference (WWDC2024).

According to Bloomberg today, Apple will launch a set of AI tools called Project Greymatter at WWDC2024, which is expected to be held from June 10 to 14, 2024, which will be integrated into core applications such as Safari, Photos and Notes and some operating systems. Users can use Project Greymatter in iOS 18 and macOS 15.

The tool tends to be practical and focuses on the daily life of ordinary consumers. Its functions include: voice transfer memo, AI image modification, Spotlight search optimization, Safari web search improvement, automatic suggestion email / SMS reply and intelligent generation of summaries. In addition, Siri personal assistants will be upgraded to provide a more natural interactive experience based on Apple's own large model, and to create custom emoticons using generative AI technology.

According to reports, Project Greymatter will be based on the "edge cloud collaboration" architecture, using a hybrid AI model that combines cloud and edge terminals-most of the processing of less computing-intensive AI functions will run entirely on the device (most of the device-side computing will be supported through Apple's self-research chip released last year), but if a function requires more computing power, the work will run in the cloud.

Apple promises that cloud-based AI computing will not invade users' privacy.

This is not the first conjecture about Apple's AI. It is reported that Apple has reached an agreement with OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT into iOS18. Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg technology journalist, said Apple had reached an agreement with OpenAI to integrate its chat robot ChatGPT into iOS18, and the partnership is expected to be announced at WWDC2024.

However, Apple is still trying to reach a deal with Google to use Gemini as an alternative because it is worried about making OpenAI a single provider of one of the major new features of iOS.

What does the industry think of Apple's AI attempt?

Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg technology journalist, believes that on the one hand, the AI function that Apple will launch is purely catch-up and does not develop by leaps and bounds. Google has developed many of the same AI features on its Pixel devices. Samsung Electronics has abandoned its own device-side AI software and switched to Gemini this year.

On the other hand, when it comes to AI, Apple's advantage may lie in its large user base, which few competitors can match. Later this year, hundreds of millions of Apple devices around the world will support these AI features, and Apple users will at least try these new features, which could make Apple the largest AI player overnight.
